Baby Hearing Tests

Hearing is extremely sensitive in babies and newborns. Hearing in infants does not only play a role in sound perception but in development too. Having it checked in advance can help. Manning Audiology experts are proficient in conducting hearing assessments and going forward with screening in babies and newborns.

What can cause hearing loss in babies and newborns?

If subjected to the following, your newborn may be at risk.

  • A variety of medication at birth whose side-effects were an impact on hearing
  • Complications during the birthing process
  • Ear infections or being infected with viruses such as the cytomegalovirus

Watch out for:

  • Your newborn not being startled by loud sounds
  • Your baby not being able to speak simple words by the age of one year
  • Your infant not recognising your voice within three months of age

How newborn hearing screening is done?

The hearing screening for newborn babies is different from that which takes place for adults, with different parameters being assessed and the modes of doing this also being unique.

Auditory Brainstem Response

When is the test performed?

In order to determine whether the baby’s ears are responsive to sounds, the test is carried out.

How is the test performed?

Leads are placed in different locations, such as the baby’s forehead, behind the shoulder and the portion behind the neck. Earphone cups are placed over the baby’s ears and these then send sounds through them and the leads measure the response.

Otoacoustic Emissions

When is the test performed?

The inner ear comprises the cochlea which further comprises the hearing apparatus. In response to sounds, the cochlea produces a sound of its own. This is measured through the test.

How is the test performed?

An earpiece is placed in the baby’s outer ear and sounds are sent through this. Normally, the cochlea sends back an echo on receiving sounds. The equipment is designed to measure this echo and check for it.

Hearing tests in babies often need to be repeated within few weeks of each other. As worrying results in tests could be more indicative of the baby being restless or fluid during the birth process being in the ear.
