Types of Hearing Aids

While choosing an aid, the key factor is comfort and one that is in keeping with your lifestyle patterns. The audiologists at Manning Audiology focus on fitting you with a hearing aid that feels as if part of you and one that seamlessly performs.

What are the
different kinds of hearing aids?

Depending upon your needs and choices,
there are various styles of hearing aids that you could choose from.

Completely in canal (CIC)

This kind of hearing aid is the smallest and least visible of all. Suitable for people who wish for the aid to be inconspicuous. Due to its small location, it is less likely to pick up background noise and due to its size, it does not have several additional features present. These aids may also require replacement frequently if wax clogs them from time to time owing to their location in the ear canal.

In the canal (ITC)

This kind of device is one that partly lies in the ear canal but not completely. Thus, though it has more features than the previous one, it is not as versatile as the larger hearing aids. Suited for people who wish for the aid to remain inconspicuous but yet get the benefit of the features.

In the ear (ITE)

These aids are suited for those who have severe hearing loss, and they come with a variety of more features than aids that fit into the canal. Though visible, they have a larger lifespan owing to the battery size, and sometimes pick up wind noise due to the location. There are two designs, one that completely fills the bowl on the outer ear and one that fills in half of this space.

Behind the ear (BTE)

In the traditional style, this device comes with a range of features. A rechargeable battery is one of them. The hearing aid is connected with a hook and rests behind the ear and the earpiece is present in the ear connected to the aid via a tube. This device can amplify sounds more than the other styles.

Receiver in canal (RIC) or Receiver in the ear (RITE)

Similar to the Behind the ear (BTE) aid, the difference is that in these devices the behind-the-ear portion is less visible. The receiver is present in the ear canal or in the outer ear, depending upon the style.

Similar to the BTE hearing aids that have the receiver in the canal (RIC) or receiver in the ear (RITE), these devices have a dome in the ear, thus keeping the ear canal widely receptive to sounds of even low frequencies.

Hearing aids have a simple yet effective concept by way of which they amplify the sound so that the wearer can have a clear idea of what is going on. These devices comprise a

  • Microphone: This is responsible for recognising and picking up sounds from the environment
  • An amplifier: This converts the sound into a code that can be recognised by the device and tuned to suit the noise levels around
  • Filters: These are customised depending upon the loudness of sound you need
  • Receiver: The amplified sounds that were converted into a code are converted back into sound waves and sent to the receiver located in the ear
